In this new series, we profile the career journeys of some of our team and highlight the unique paths and opportunities available to statisticians and programmers joining our expanding team at Veramed.

This profile focuses on Chetan Mistry, a Statistics Manager with over ten years’ experience spanning a range of roles. We caught up with Chetan to discuss his career, his typical working day, and his motivations.

What is a typical day like for you? 

My day is extremely varied.  We typically start the day officially with a stand-up meeting- which is a ten or fifteen minute call every day with co-workers.  I’ve usually briefly caught up on emails and client communications before that. During that call, we all give a brief one-minute description of what we have planned that day, what meetings we have and our top priorities.

After that, I might spend time in one-to-ones with my direct reports,  and governance and subject matter expert calls with clients as well as working through my operational tasks.

When did you join Veramed?

I joined almost six years ago to the day, when the company was only about eight people–and we’ve grown significantly since then. 

What were your motivations?

At the time I’d had several industry jobs, and I was looking for somewhere I could develop and add value, as well as feel valued. Those were the most important factors for me at that time.  

How has your career path evolved?

It’s been a real journey!  When I joined, I was working in a support capacity, helping other statisticians and programmers with their work.  As I gained experience and confidence, I started operating more independently and taking on projects of my own with support from a mentor. The level of support I needed scaled back over time. Then, I took up my first line management role, which was a significant step up in terms of responsibility.  I had to make sure that I was effectively coaching and motivating our new starters and working on advancing their skills.  

Over the years, my responsibility has increased, and I now have five direct reports.

I also progressed from not only working operationally on projects but also acting as a Subject Matter Expert.  My experience built up as clients gradually sought me out for specific skill sets and knowledge.  Now I work primarily in our functional service provider business, and anyone who joins us in that capacity becomes part of my team.  

What is your proudest achievement?

I’m happiest when I see my direct reports succeed.  I feel proud of them and proud of myself because it shows I’ve succeeded in nurturing their development. I find it inspiring to have a positive impact on someone’s life and career and help them to fulfil their potential.  

What does success look like for you? 

For me, success isn’t merely making progress with something, but it’s making progress at a consistent rate.  I very much enjoy the work I’m doing now, and I want to do more of it. I’m lucky in that I have a lot of variety in my role, which keeps me on my toes and interested.

What has surprised you most about your career path? 

When I joined Veramed, I was uncertain about what I was going to do. The guidance I’ve had from my line manager and the people around me at Veramed has helped me to find that niche where I’m able to fulfil my potential and excel.
